Canberra Track Classic recap

A couple of weeks have passed since the Canberra Track Classic and it gives me a chance to reflect on the event.

I always enjoy the opportunity to compete at home. There are definitely extra comforts that a home competition offers; the luxury of your own bed and pillow, familiar routines, familiar surroundings on the track and in the field and the support of family and friends.

The other thing that makes a home competition so special for me is the support I receive from the young athletes I coach. Their cheers, words of encouragement and well wishes boost my confidence, and it lifts the atmosphere of the competition.

The Canberra Track Classic was re-introduced into the tour last year and to have it back for a second year running was very exciting, especially when it means I get to throw. At last years meet it was a close battle between Kathryn Mitchell and myself, and we both came away with World Championship qualifiers.

When the track classic rolled around this year I was looking forward to another opportunity for Kathryn and I to go head to head and see what we could throw.  Unfortunately it was not meant to be this time around. Kathryn and I didn’t get our chance to battle it out in Canberra, and I finished the competition with 59.02m, slightly down on the goal I set myself for the day.

The Athletics Australia tour meets are always great fun, and having the chance to do what I love, throwing javelin, at home is always such an awesome occasion. A huge thank you needs to go out to Athletics Australia, ACT Athletics, the officials, volunteers and my fellow competitors. I can’t wait to do it all again next year!

Looking ahead now to the National Championships
